A Message from Senator Dr. the Honourable Bhoendradatt Tewarie
Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Independence.
As we celebrate our Golden Jubilee, on behalf of the members of the Inter Ministerial Committee for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Independence I extend congratulations to all citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, wherever they may live. This anniversary is a significant milestone on our nation’s history and every citizen should feel a special pride in their personal contribution to what we have achieved since our National Flag was hoisted on August 31st 1962. On that occasion we solidified our right to chart the path of our destiny.
Independence in the 21st century signifies the sovereignty of our nation in an interconnected and interdependent world. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary of Independence we must focus on the next fifty years and beyond, planning strategically for what we need to be doing today to get to where we want to be tomorrow. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge all who have contributed to get us to this point and to take pride in the spirit of liberty, which as a people, has been our strength in forging a nation. Henceforth, let us continue to move forward with faith, with hope and with commitment to meaningful action.
Half a century ago we pledged to be guided by the watchwords ‘discipline, production and tolerance’ given to us by our first Prime Minister, Dr. Eric Eustace Williams. Fifty years later, we will continue to strive to be competitive, claim our place in the world and intensify our efforts for higher achievements.
This website will provide information about Trinidad and Tobago’s commemoration of our 50th Anniversary where the focus is on celebrating our talent, creativity and culture as well as having our people participate and celebrate with each other. The focus is on culture and the creative arts, community, sports, national pride in our sovereignty as a nation and unity as a people of diverse origins.
If you have any suggestions please make them as we will update this site from time to time. Please accept my very best wishes for a happy 50th Anniversary celebration in 2012. Beyond that I wish every citizen success in all that you do. I wish continued prosperity to our great nation and to all our people both at home and abroad.
Best wishes to all on our 50th Anniversary of Independence.
